At Least

I know we aren’t supposed to minimize the experiences of others with “at least this didn’t happen” etc, but sometimes using “at least” when talking to myself is helpful. It somehow helps me zoom out and see situations for what they really are versus how they feel.

Now before you start to think that I’m gaslighting myself, let me give you an example from today. I woke up this morning and took comfort in my weekend routine. I made my breakfast, put some electrolytes in my water, made my cold brew concoction in my glass jar, took my supplements, and changed into my gym clothes.

I live in an urban area, so I park on the street. I hopped into my car and cued up my favorite new Taylor Swift song, “Cleveland!” (I can feel you judging!) and looked at my dash where I was met with red letters alerting me to a flat tire. Ugh! I stepped out of my car and sure enough, the driver’s side back tire was dangerously low.

My mom had car trouble a couple of weeks ago, and our cars are from the same dealership. “At least” I remembered what number to call for roadside assistance.

After making the call, I found myself thinking, “At least this happened on a Saturday when I’m not in a hurry to get to work.”

As I made my way back inside to fold laundry while I waited for the tow truck to arrive, I said to myself, “At least this happened in my neighborhood, so I can get a few things done from the comfort of my home while I wait.”

When I arrived the car dealership via front seat of the tow truck, it didn’t sound like they were going to be able to get this tire changed today, and then suddenly, the service specialist said they had a tire in stock and would move some services around to get this done today. I was so grateful. I thought, “At least I won’t have to worry about this on Monday.”

It was going to be about a two hour wait. I could have sat there the entire time, but my husband was on his way home from work and came to pick me up. “At least I didn’t have to wait here for my car to be finished.”

I’m now home with my new tire, and while those are expensive, “At least I’m in a position to be able to pay for a new tire.”

I know we refrain from saying “at least” to others and for good reason. I know we shouldn’t minimize our own feelings or own pain.

And even so, sometimes “at least” helps us keep a little perspective when life’s minor irritations weigh us down.

At least that’s what I’m telling myself on this rainy Saturday.
