I recently had the opportunity to attend a celebration of retirees and award nominated teachers. It’s such a fun and heart warming evening.
As I sat there listening to what each retiree intended to do after retirement, I couldn’t help but notice that almost every retiree said that they had plans to do more of one of two things…
- Spend time with loved ones.
- Travel.
When I think about what makes me feel the most whole, it’s those two things and when paired together, there’s really nothing better.
As I walked out of the event with a colleague, we talked about how we both noticed those common themes. We talked about how we would love to find a way to not wait but start now. Why wait to spend more time with those we love? What we are waiting for? Why wait to travel more?
We act as if we have more time and yet none of us know exactly how much time we or those we love have left. I’m not trying to be morbid or to make any of us sad.
I’m simply asking us to live. Live now. Let’s not wait for summer or Friday or next year.
Because we simply do not have time to waste.
I spent this weekend with my mom at the beach. This morning we had the best time collecting shelling and delighting in our finds. We would plunge our hands into the shallow water to catch a big one more the tide pulled it away. We collected so many treasures until our lower backs couldn’t take it anymore.
We went to bed early, so we could do it again the next day. I can’t remember the last time I spent less time on my phone. In fact, I was hesitant to write this post because I would require me to pull my phone out again, but she’s asleep, and I want to remember this time together and cherish it.
Travel with my OG favorite person on this Mother’s Day. And to our favorite the place-the beach. It was a perfect day.
I’m glad we did not wait.
